Stranton Lodge 1862: Over a Century of Brotherhood and Service

For more than a century, our lodge has stood as a place of friendship, trust, and service. While much has changed in the world around us, the principles of Freemasonry remain the same: to act with integrity, to support one another as brothers, and to serve the communities we are part of.

Our history is something we are proud of, but it’s the way we live out these values today that defines who we are.

What is a lodge?

A Masonic lodge is both a group of people and the place where they meet. It’s a community of men who come together to share friendship, learn from one another, and take part in meaningful traditions. The word “lodge” also refers to the building or meeting room where members gather.

Each lodge has its own history and character, but all lodges are part of the wider family of Freemasonry. Joining a lodge means becoming part of a supportive circle of like-minded people, where values such as respect, integrity, and kindness are at the heart of everything we do.

Our Lodge History

Stranton Lodge was founded in 1880, taking its name from the ancient village of Stranton, which is now part of modern Hartlepool. Our first Master was J.W. Cameron, well known as the founder of the Lion Brewery in Stranton — the birthplace of the famous Strongarm beer.

Since then, the Lodge has continued to grow and welcome new generations of members. Today, we meet at the Hartlepool Raby Masonic Hall, a purpose-built Masonic hall opened in 1893, which has been our home for well over a century.

About Freemasonry

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest fraternal organisations, with roots going back hundreds of years. At its heart, it’s about bringing people together in friendship, learning, and mutual support.

Freemasons believe in helping good men become even better — by encouraging honesty, kindness, and respect in everyday life.
